The popular RAF Radar Museum, near Horning, is open from Good Friday 29 March – 10 November, every Tuesday to Saturday and each Bank Holiday Monday from 10am – 5pm. The once top-secret radar establishment occupies the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar station, and is the biggest museum in North Norfolk.
Brand new for 2024 is a new display about RAF air defence in 1944 and the part played by mobile radar units in D-Day and other campaigns in North West Europe. There is also the restored Nuclear Reporting Post, which tells the story of how the base was used in the Cold War to warn and track a nuclear attack and fallout if one occurred, and a newly renovated History Room which shows the development of RAF radar technology.
A Tornado Cockpit joins the two other cockpits at the museum and is housed with the Jaguar cockpit. The Tornado saw active service in the first Gulf War and the aircraft’s full history forms part of the display. Steps enable visitors to look inside the cockpit and also to access the rear to experience the view that the co-pilot would have.
